Soften Lips With A
Great Natural Cosmetic Product

Using a natural cosmetic product for your lips, like a balm, gloss or lipstick, will not only moisturize your lips, but help heal and repair dry skin. Many commercial lip treatments either sit on the lip and rub off in a matter of minutes or penetrate the lips leaving them dried and stained with color that is difficult to wash off. What do these commercial lip treatments do to the health of your lips???

....well, plenty of press has been given lately towards the unhealthy chemicals in lipsticks and glosses. These chemicals include Lead contamination, Chemical Dyes, Petroleum Products and the list goes on.

While these levels of chemicals may not be extremely risky after one exposure....levels build up over time making side effects dangerous for your health. According to research from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, women ingest on average 2 lbs of lipstick in their lifetime!!

That's a large amount of exposure over a lifetime to the damaging effects of lead that include toxicity to many organs as well as learning and behavior disorders. The demand for natural cosmetics, not just for lips, but for eyes too, is increasing rapidly as many people realize the risks in commercial products.

Go Bold or Subtle with Natural Lipstick

On my previous Natural Cosmetic Product page I reviewed some great lipsticks and glosses by Afterglow. I also have reviewed some by fantastic new natural cosmetics and found them just as effective.

The semi-transparent lipstick by Dr. Hauschka goes on smooth and creamy. I found that it was easy to apply, didn't cake and I only had to
re-apply it once through the day. It comes in a little mirror compact with a brush, which I wasn't used to, but actually prefer now. I also found out that many makeup artists prefer this method of application for lips.

I found the color pretty versatile as well. I applied it lightly for a subtle look or a thicker coat for bolder looking lips. I don't wear lipstick often, but I found this product was easy for me to use.

If you are a lover of lipstick and enjoy experimenting with more color options, this natural cosmetic product line also carries a Natural Lipstick that comes in a bigger selection of colors. They soften your lips with jojoba and rose wax just as well as the semi-transparent line and definitely have great staying power. However, I found it wasn't as versatile if you are looking for a lipstick that can be both subtle and bold.

Dr. Hauschka also makes a Natural Cosmetics Lipgloss that contains apricot oil and mango butter which smooth over your lips beautifully and protect your pout with mega moisture. I've used tons of different glosses over the years that either make my lips super sticky or the gloss rubs off right away; this gloss did neither. It just delivered subtle color and shine with minimal re-application.

Bare Your Lips With A Lip Balm

On a day to day basis, at home taking care of the kids, a lip balm is a staple for me. Especially in cooler, drier climates, lips will dry out and crack easily. Keeping them hydrated and protected is a must. Many lip balms contain chemical waxes, like carnuba wax or parrafin wax that only strip your lips of their own moisture barrier over time.

Lip balms in a natural cosmetic product line should contain natural wax like beeswax and vegetable or fruit butters to maintain healthy lips.

Overall, the key to beautifully moisturized lips is to nourish and hydrate from within (with a well balanced diet and plenty of water) and apply a good natural balm to exfoliated lips. Building this "base" for great lips makes additions like lipstick or gloss glide over your lips without cracking, caking or drying out.

A couple great natural cosmetics balms I've tried are by Badger. Their formulas are simple, natural and keep my lips soft and smooth. My old stand by is Badger's Pomegranate Lip Balm I apply it throughout the day and in the winter months before I go to bed. I also love the scent of their Lavender and Orange Lip Balm. When I'm outside lots in the summer, I use their natural cosmetics SPF lip balm. It contains a natural physical sunblock to protect lips in the summer heat.

Make your Eyes Pop!!

If you're not highlighting your lips as the focus of your face, then make your eyes stand out as the feature attraction. The cosmetic industry seems to come out every month with a new mascara that triples, quadruples....etc. your lashes. They show a beautiful model with fake lashes or computer eye enhancements to sell their products with a teeny, teeny caption on the bottom of the screen explaining that the eyes shown are enhanced.

Not to mention, they neglect to inform you of the Aluminum Powders, Lead, Parabens, and Petroleum Products that coat your lashes as well. Some of the most popular mascaras by companies like Loreal or Covergirl top the list for most harmful chemicals.

Substituting these commercial varieties for natural cosmetic products is not only smarter, but your lashes will look even better. Many natural cosmetics for mascara have extracts and oils that nourish the roots and cause your lashes to be stronger and healthier.

I trialed some mascara by Afterglow that I loved (details on my previous natural cosmetic product page) and now I've also tested some eye liners, pencils, eye shadows and other mascaras that I've found do a great job as well.

Dr. Hauschka's natural cosmetic product line carries a great Voluminous Mascara that also adds some subtle shimmers of color to your eye. I was skeptical of the color shimmers at first, but I found them subtle enough that they enhanced my eye color well. I tend to use this mascara for a more dramatic look if I'm going out for date night.

For a daytime look, I use Dr. Hauschka's Intermezzo Mascara in brown. It thickens and strengthens my lashes and doesn't flake off. I found this natural cosmetic product does a great job of separating lashes and I've never had it clump up.

To line and enhance those peepers, try Logona Eye Pencils. They come in a variety of colors and were easy to apply across the eye. Because the ingredients are all natural and gentle on the eyes, they can be applied on the inner or outer lid. Even though I have sensitive eyes and I wear contacts, this eye pencil didn't irritate my eyes.

Again, another great by Dr. Hauschka is their eyeshadow. They contain all natural ingredients that have been regulated by the strictest standards in Europe. I loved their Eye Shadow Palette for the variety of natural colors, but if you're looking for bolder shadows they have a wide selection of Individual Eye Shadows. I found this natural cosmetic product was easy to apply and blend onto the eye and the color didn't crease.

If you're looking for a multi-tasking tool (and who isn't) then try Revolution's Beauty Balm. It can be used on the eyes, cheeks, lips and decolletage and comes in a variety of colors. I found that the color (my fav shade is Sunkissed) was easy to blend on skin (even the eyes, if used as an eye shadow) and is small enough to carry in a small clutch for touch ups. I love how moisturizing it is and it leaves a dewy look on my cheeks.

Are You an Eye Shadow Expert???

I am willing to admit that I'm not the best at creative eye shadow application, but I would love to see what unique ideas you have!! Post a pic of your best eye shadow applications to give me and my readers a boost to our beauty routines!
