THe TRUTH About Commercial Sunscreens and Natural Suntan Lotion

Finding all natural suntan lotion has now become more difficult than ever!!

Several companies used to sell suntan lotions free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, oxybenzone and dyes. This gave consumers a variety of all natural suntan lotion products to choose from.

New regulations for sunscreen regarding UVA protection have now made it impossible for all natural suntan lotions to meet the standards without adding synthetic ingredients. As a result many natural product manufacturers have dropped their sunscreen lines until new technology can produce natural sunblock that meets guidelines.

Zinc and titanium dioxide have been found to be fairly effective natural ingredients to block UV rays. They are classified as physical "blocks" since they don't use chemicals to block the sun's rays. Because these minerals can give the skin a white hue when applied, companies grind them into a very fine powder, a process called micronizing.

Research has come out showing that because the particles are so fine they could be absorbed through the skin into the blood stream resulting in a variety of potentially harmful effects.

Several research groups find that titanium dioxide is potentially less harmful than zinc when micronized. The tough part is some labels don't say if it's micronized or not. It may be an indication if it says it's a mineral sunscreen or has nano-particles.

However, compared to the chemical blocks in every other commercial suntan lotion, natural mineral sunscreens are definitely the lesser health risk.

What Can You Do As The Consumer??

Well, look for sunscreens that meet the following three criteria.

  • The sunscreen you're selecting is blocks rays naturally using titanium dioxide or zinc
  • The product is free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, oxybenzone, dyes, triethanolamine, diazalidonyl urea, formaldehyde and PABA (which is rarely an ingredient now).
  • If possible look for natural sunblocks that are not micronized (very difficult to find as of recent).

You as the consumer, can also do your own part by covering up as much as possible with light clothing and a hat, re-apply your natural suntan lotion frequently and BEFORE being exposed to sun. This is especially important for your children.

UV Natural Sunscreen makes the best suntan lotion I've come across and it's as natural as it comes. It is ranked NUMBER 1 by the Environmental Working Group and offers full spectrum protection. A small amount of this product goes a long way, so it's economical too. This brand also makes a Baby Natural Sunscreen too that's not just great for babies, but kids too. This baby version also comes in a small tube that's perfect for your diaper bag.

*TIP* If you find that this product is greasy or not absorbing properly, you are likely using too much of it. Fully rub product into skin and allow 10-15 minutes for it to absorb before soaking up the sun!!

John Master's Natural Suntan Lotion is a great sunblock for your face, is super light and can be used under makeup. It is a SPF of 30 which is pretty high for a natural sunblock, however the natural block is micronized. If I'm not wearing makeup and out all day (ex. gardening or at the beach) then I use this sunscreen. It is definitely effective as a sunblock as long as it's re-applied as per the instructions.

For light SPF protection...I have used Just Naturals Sunblock Lotion. Provides a small amount of SPF protection, but is completely natural. Plus is feels absolutely amazing on the skin and anyone else I've introduced it to loves it. I have even used it on my face and found it is light, non-greasy and super moisturizing.

I find that even though my skin in highly susceptible to the sun's rays, I tend to just wear a hat and apply sunscreen on the rest of my body that has exposed skin. Having to re-apply sunblock over my makeup can be a bit of a hassle.

Don't forget your lips!! Apply a great SPF natural lip balm throughout the day to keep your pucker protected. A great one to try is Badger's SPF Lip Balm.
